Prize Buck (Subwoofer Stag Collection)
Jesse Gerard (Carrot Grant), 2011
American Ash, Wool Felt, Rare-Earth Motors, Aluminum Diaphragms

Gerard, a 2010 grad of University of the Arts’ industrial design program, made his first set of speakers for an exhibition at DesignPhiladelphia. The experience led to him quitting his job and starting to make custom and limited edition speakers under the name Carrot Grant. Gerard handcrafts his speakers at local co-working and tool-sharing space, NextFab. He estimates he uses about fifteen of their tools — from the 3D printer to make prototypes, to the digital embroidery machine to affix his bunny logo — in the creation of one speaker. He drives an hour north into Pennsylvania — stag country — to collect the wood straight from its source. “Part of how I like to design products is to keep it local and work with other small businesses,” says Gerard. “This is a consumer electronic and a piece of Philadelphia.” CT
